Repent, as Jesus commanded.
From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” – Matthew 4:17 ESV
Repent means to turn back on how I am thinking about things and to reconsider. Repent, for the kingdom of God is now available to me. If I am to walk in the easy yoke with Jesus and have the light load because of who I am yoked to – I need to understand that I am working with the kingdom of God.
Disciple means I am a follower who has learned to believe in the truth of the doctrine of my teacher. So there should be similarity between me and my teacher.
Interesting to note that while Jesus was not a disciple of John the Baptist, He did let John baptize Him before He entered into ministry. It is also interesting to note that the gospel John the Baptist preached was the exact same as Jesus preached. A disciple is going to follow the preaching and teaching of the one who trained him. We do not come up with new doctrines in order to become effective disciples of Jesus.
As a disciple, I have a heart for those who do not know Jesus and I am open to what God wants me to do. Wherever I am placed by God, I will seek to be used by God, to see others are invited to follow Jesus and make disciples.
I do that because Jesus extended a call to repentance to unlikely and unexpected people. The first disciples did not ignore the call, they abandon their old way of living and accepted Jesus’ invitation to follow Him. As a follower of Christ, I have the privilege of answering God’s call too and extending that same call to those who need to repent and follow.
