A true disciple

Jesus, My Everything (Matt Maher)

I am born after the flesh just like everyone else. I come into this world at enmity to God. I need a new nature, I need to be made into a new person. The regeneration of my soul is my testimony to my Saviour.

This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.  For there are three that testify:  the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree.  If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. – 1 John 5:6-9 ESV

It is the work of the Holy Spirit. He is involved in progressive sanctification, He gives me victory over the world, gives me peace, love, joy and grace.

Water is involved and intimates purity and purifying power. Jesus was holy, harmless and undefiled. The testimony at John’s baptism was a witness of Him, and prepared people for Him. My soul has been purified and washed.

Blood is involved too – this He shed and it was for my ransom. It finished with the practices of the Old Testament. It confirmed Jesus’ own predictions and the truth of His ministry and doctrine. It showed unparalleled love to God that He would die a sacrifice in making atonement for the sins of the world.

He demonstrates unspeakable love to me and no one would deceive those they truly love. Jesus demonstrated his disinterest to any secular advantage. No impostor and deceiver ever proposes to themselves contempt and a violent cruel death.

It lays on me, as a disciple, obligation to suffer and die for Him. He calls me into conformity with Him, in sufferings. Neither He nor His kingdom is of this world.

Fear God more

A Mighty Fortress is our God – (Choir) / Martin Luther

Jesus was the first preacher of the gospel, then He sent His disciples and apostles.

While God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. – Hebrews 2:4  ESV

I preached a sermon recently quoting the fact that Satan is no longer the king of hell and for sure He is not even if some of think so. He has no power of eternal punishment because he is the one who will be punished. Jesus Himself took some time to exhort His those who followed Him to fear God more than those who can kill the body.

Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil. – Hebrews 2:14  ESV

In disciple-making, I cannot help another unless I stand by the side of and on the same level of the one I am discipling.

Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. – Hebrews 2:17  ESV

And if Jesus was tempted, why wouldn’t I be tempted. So I accept it, leave it in the Lord’s hand and I am in no way disgraced or dishonoured. In fact, I look for how He will set up an escape from said temptation.

For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. – Hebrews 2:18  ESV
